Little Simz - Lotus Album Review: An Exhibition of Excellency
Little Simz sixth studio album executes the manifesto of raw human emotion in a genuine, authentic and truly magnificent way. ‘Lotus’ presents a drastically diverse range of sounds from start to finish and utilises her signature style to curate a display of musical brilliance.
Simbiatu Abisola Abiola Ajikawo aka Little Simz has cemented herself as one of British rap’s greats through her innovation, incredible production and beautiful writing.
This piece holds you in its arms as it tells you an awe inspiring story of beauty, hardship and perseverance. Those arms are that of a kind, brave, comforting and strong individual.
The variety in both sound and message is such a poignant element of this record, it is all connected through Simz’ identity. Across her career, Simz has curated an incredibly distinct flare to her music and uses bold techniques to define what her beautiful messages stand on top of.
One component which has contributed to her boundary pushing portfolio is a groovy, gritty and almost tribal sound. This is created using low, deep and delicately produced bass riffs paired with fast paced and intricate drum beats. It has been responsible for incredible songs such as ‘Point and Kill’ and ‘Fear No Man’. It makes a glorious return on this new record in songs like ‘Enough’ and ‘Lion’.
Regular collaborator, Obongjayar features twice on the album and as always is a superb addition to Simz’ art. ‘Lion’ echoes a glorious groove with a mean hook and silky silk vocals from start to finish, a delightful listen.
The second feature is ‘Flood’. The first single of the album and one that flaunts Simz’ evolution. It uses intensity and relentless bass and drums to create an army of auditory movement that is breathtaking. The production of the songwriting unites an army of noise, a unified power of glorious sound.
This harmonious collection of instruments is a repeated feature on this album as well as many of Simz’ best pieces. This sound varies from that of ‘Flood’ to a striking orchestral phenomenon.
Deeply layered songs that often use wind instruments, horns and hold many parallels to an orchestra, create an immersive and atmospheric sound.
A string section weaves through the album's title track, ‘Lotus’ and allows subtle layers to create this plain of elegance to surround the centre of the music.
These signature moves make a whimsical feature across the entire record to execute a sound so unique and distinct to Little Simz.
Beautifully delivered, recorded and produced backing vocals reiterate powerful messages and are such a warm treat to the ears. ‘Only’ demonstrates Simz’s intelligent approach to the entire production of this album. This song features Lydia Kitto (of Jungle) and allows for angelic vocals to lead the chorus and transform the entire feeling. The way in which it is introduced and used is unbelievably similar to that of Kitto’s award winning band and works tremendously well. It uses space impeccably.
There is simply such a wide variety throughout this album that keeps you on your toes while offering you invigorating surprises.
The songwriting leaves such an impression due to intricate structure and the ability to strip back songs so that instruments and individual sounds can really shine and take a deep breath of fresh air.
‘Free’ which was released as a single prior to the album is a wonderful example, a simple bass line, drum beat and guitar riff stand their ground as Simz delivers an honest and raw monologue. An outstanding observation of love, fear, bravery and vulnerability.
Strings then float in and out of the track to create texture and a sense of euphoria. Piano notes are scattered throughout the song to elevate these feelings to a further level. The song then transitions seamlessly into a groovy and slick bridge which brings the song to a glorious finale, accumulating the gradually built layers to a crescendo.
The established sound of Little Simz is so distinctive and has clearly matured, using memorable previous techniques as well as fresh elements to make songs that vary to induce a range of emotions from deep reflection to buoyant hip groovers. These work as the beautiful set for the story line which Simz and talented contributors execute with a real passion and drive.
Self love pushes from your headphones into your mind and is contrasted by heartbreaking stories of betrayal and hatred throughout the record.
Little Simz recently filed a lawsuit against former collaborator and producer Inflo over £1.7 million in unpaid debts. The opening track, ‘Thief’ is a brutal speech supposedly attacking Inflo and sharing the real pain felt as a result of the situation.
These honest and personal stories are placed throughout the album with a boldness that creates a real vulnerability and humility. ‘Hollow’ directly speaks to the perpetrator of Simz’ pain, a song relatable to many that have been hurt by loved ones. It also demonstrates the technical element of selecting the most appropriate structure to empower lyrics. ‘Hollow’ is verse after verse of honesty.
‘Blood’ is an intelligent take on a conversation between two siblings and breaks down the intricacies of support and love within a family. It is heartbreaking and it is real. It is enchanting yet harrowing. An exposure and breakdown of navigating your own hardships alongside those that you care about.
From dark and meaningful expressions of pain to heartful positive poems. ‘Peace’ is a truly beautiful song, affirmation after affirmation brings a kinder, more optimistic side to the album. A reminder that through hard times, strength is vital.
This album represents true artistry. A piece of breathtaking proportions. From the feeling of falling to your knees in complete despair as tears rush down your face, to the feeling of strength, the feeling of stoicism and the feeling of optimism.
Collecting so many different emotions using sound and executing it with a once in a lifetime ferocity is what makes Little Simz one of the greatest artists to grace this planet.
